Ignoring the Elephant in the Room: How Monta Ellis Continues to Fly Under The Radar

Not many would consider the Shooting Guard position in the NBA to be at a lost for talent. If I told you the top 12 Shooting Guards in the NBA were Kobe, D-Wade, Manu Ginobili, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Brandon Roy, Eric Gordon, Stephen Jackson, Demar Derozan, Joe Johnson, O.J. Mayo, and Kevin Martin, you would say that sounds about right. It is hard to count to 12 without the number 3. Behind Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade comes Monta Ellis.

Ellis is one of the most dangerous scorers in the NBA today. His blinding speed and excellent body control add an element to his came that not many players have. Not only does go 0-60 in the blink of an eye, but he decelerates just as fast making his pull up jumper impossible to contest. He gets off the ground so quickly off of one foot that big men have no chance trying to block his dunk attempts, just ask the Knicks Ronnie Turiaf! He has an excellent knack for knowing where the rim is at all times and uses a variety of moves, using his body control, to avoid charges and defenders while having the concentration to finish through traffic.

Ellis is 3rd amongst SG’s in scoring (24.3), 2nd in assists(5.6), and 1st in steals (2.16). He is the only player in the NBA averaging at least 20 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals per game, but somehow, Monta continues to slip under the radar.

Dont worry though, Monta was picked 43rd in the 2005 Draft meaning every team in the NBA passed on him at least once, some teams twice. It’s safe to say he’s motivated by being slept on. Keep on sleeping though, I want to see what he’ll improve in next!
